The major role of the postpartum doula is to help the family make a smooth transition by educating and supporting the new parents so they feel empowered to care for their newborn with confidence. The services I provide include but are not limited to: infant care while the mother/family rests; educating the new family in baby care and feeding methods following the pediatrician’s guidelines or that of the American Academy of Pediatrics; escorting the mother and/or baby to follow-up appointments; light housekeeping; answering the telephone and greeting guests; laundry and loading/unloading the dishwasher; grocery shopping and errand running; meal/snack preparation; providing resources.
Studies have shown that women who have social support during the postpartum period tend to have less postpartum depression, breastfeed for a longer duration, and make a better adjustment to parenthood.
